The Crayon Box From Heaven

Hannah is OBSESSED with coloring.

No jokes.

The girl will color for hours.  She knows right where all of her supplies live, how to get them out and clean them up.  All by herself.  When she wakes up she often gets the crayons out before I can get breakfast on the table.  She colors at home, at school, at church, at restaurants, at friend's houses, pretty much anywhere we can find a flat surface to put a piece of paper.

Here's my problem with crayons.  They come in boxes of assorted colors.

That might make sense in your house but not around here.  Hannah mostly likes to color with one color.  For a while it was brown, now it's pink.  When she recently started to color with multiple colors I got all excited that we were entering a new phase of coloring.  Then I realized, all the pink crayons were gone.  Expired.  Finished.  Colored down to a size no longer able to be squeezed in her tight little grasp.

Then I stumbled across the Crayola Crayon's CUSTOM COLOR BOX!! (Yes, we're Crayola snobs.  There really is no comparison.)

You pick four colors and Crayola sends you a customized box of 64 crayons - 16 of each color.  When our box came it was perfect.  Three different pinks and red.

Hannah was delighted.

I emailed the Crayola people and asked them to donate a box for a give-away.  They replied, "We're currently in the process of evaluating our social media outreach and participation in product reviews and giveaways, and will keep you in mind as we move forward."  So, no freebies today and I wasn't paid for this review.  I'll definitely let you know if they ever finish evaluating and give me a box to give away!

My entire experience with Crayola was awesome!  Customizing the box was easy and inexpensive ($10.99 for a box of all pink crayons is MUCH less expensive than continuing to buy boxes of 24 for the one pink inside.)  Shipping was fast and their customer service responded to my inquiry the next day.  The only thing more I could ask for is a customizable Twistables box, but that isn't offered at this time.

I'm posting this on WFMW and sending it in to Parent Hacks because it's getting close to Christmas and this would make a fabulous gift for all the other I'll Only Color With THAT One kids out there!

  2. There used to be a Crayola store at Arundel Mills, but in looking at their directory it looks like it's gone. Boo.

Anyway - love the idea of a four color box! Will keep it in mind if Abby ever gets such preferences...

  3. I loved to color, and I'm hoping Julie will inherit the trait. I still have some coloring books that I received for my birthday IN COLLEGE.

  6. She is beautiful.

    And SUCH a girl.

(Not that girls have to like pink. But I mean. She is SUCH a girl.)

Have you ever heard of/gone to the Crayola factory?? I went with my grandmother when I was probably 9 or 10 and it was AWESOME! I remember not wanting to go because I was thinking it sounded so "baby" but we had a great time. I don't remember toooo much about it, but we saw how crayons were made, and they had all these special activity rooms... Hannah might like it! I'm not sure where it is from MD- close enough to take a bus but far enough to make it like a day trip.

  10. I used to like Crayola crayons best but then I learned about the Stockmar ones. They have great texture and all *plus* are transparent enough that yellow on blue really does show as greenish.

  12. I had to search for your post today. I have been all over the Crayola Store site and I couldn't find this! I was really hoping you had a link to the exact product--and you do!

My problem is simple--there are always 3 shades of orange in a box of 24 crayons, but only one black, one green, one brown, and one blue. Those colors are used the most at my house! (Well, and there's only one red, so I'm going to have to choose if I only order one box).

I told my mom about this and she said she might be willing to order it for the children, depending on price. I had to look it up today.

Thanks for the great idea! Everyone was looking for black and brown crayons again today . . . as we were coloring turkeys!
