This past week our photography assignment was Light. The goal was to pay attention to the three settings that control light - ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed and to try to take some shots in manual mode.
Snow shots are great for over and under exposing pictures. I took many "wrong" shots before I got a bunch that turned out well. I think this one worked because it shows very little snow, mostly kid and sled. I love it because it was a cloudy day and there are no harsh shadows.
Taken with a Canon Rebel XSi
Focal Length: 35mm
Shutter Speed: 1/125
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO: 100
I'm pretty sure that my favorite thing about this shot is subject (a post-face-plant 4-year old) but lighting wise, the snow is bright and the person (Zach) is well exposed.

Focal Length: 35mm
Shutter Speed: 1/1600
Aperture: f/2.2
ISO: 100
Now it's your turn. Upload your favorite 1-3 shots from this week showing a properly exposed picture. Using the Mister Linkey fields below type in your name and enter the permalink of your post or picture. Be sure to link back to this post if possible, either in the text of your post or the caption of your picture.
If you have a blog make sure to talk about what (if anything) you learned about your camera and proper exposure this week. As always, leave a comment below with feedback for me. Feel free to click on to other class member's photos and leave feedback for them also.
You have until 7:00 PM (EST) on Monday evening to upload and link your photographs. Good luck and please let me know if you have any questions!

Nice shots, Amy! I have to say, I'm a HUGE fan of the second one with the really awesome bright colors in his jacket. I know you're trying to go SOOC with these, but you know how I am... I would LOVE the first if the orange of the sled was a leeeeetle more saturated. All the same, for purposes of this assignment, the light is great! :)
ReplyDeleteYa I love the second shot as well!!! It's super vibrant and I laughed with all the snow on his face :0)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I'm not on top of things this week Amy. I took a bunch of pictures but none in manual mode... I still want to do the "class" it was just a crazy week (although I'm sure it was for everyone).
ReplyDeleteI'll be checking out everyone else's though!
Of course, here I am posting last minute..but that's nothing new for me :D I really enjoyed this assignment! I've wanted to get better at full Manual mode but like Jen said on her blog, with taking pics of little kids I never really get a chance b/c I'm always nervous I'll miss a really cute shot if my settings aren't just right. So instead of little kids (who move WAY too much :D) I took pics of some teens :D They were perfect for this assignment. Another thing that is different for me is that I didn't do ANY post processing...and I think the shots turned out pretty well considering :D Thanks for the challenge Amy! And your pics were
ReplyDeleteGREAT...I LOVE the emotion that your pictures captured!!
I just posted... last minute too! :-) This was a good challenge for me as well. I feel the same as Becka and Jen not wanting to miss a good shot because i'm not comfortable with different settings. I'll definitely play more with shooting manual.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Christy, somehow the snow made this a crazier week in some ways and I flaked out on manual mode. Hopefully I'll be back in the game next week :-) Do you take make-up assignments? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a good read on our light assignment so thought I would share... check out this link:

Sorry - I fail this week. You would think with all of the snow-time at home I would have played with my camera, right? I spent too much time shoveling and not enough time playing, I guess!
ReplyDeleteI am in the same boat as Corrine and Christy - I'll do extra credit next time instead of turning it in late, though!
Hi All! The submissions for the "light" assignment are all fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI didn't submit photos this time. I do hope to rise to the task of learning more about how my camera reacts to different lighting conditions, though. I'll share a few photos when I have that in mind.
I am looking forward to participating in the next assignment!
