This week our photography assignment was on Aperture. This is one of my favorite topics and I LOVED a lot of the pictures I took! It was really hard to do the small aperture/large depth of field though. Maybe because I didn't go anywhere fun and every time I looked out onto the horizon to see what would be in focus I didn't like it.
Here are two of my small depth of field images. The first one is from the log pile in my back yard. I had no idea it would look this cool when I shot it but I definitely like how it turned out.
Taken with a Canon Rebel XSi
Focal Length: 35mm
Shutter Speed: 1/1000
Aperture: f/2.0
ISO: 400
I love this second shot but I actually wish the depth of field was just a hair deeper so that the flower in the top left corner was in sharper focus. These flowers kind of look out of focus anyway, just because of how God made them, so it's cool to see the super sharp yellow against the naturally fuzzy purple.

Focal Length: 35mm
Shutter Speed: 1/250
Aperture: f/2.0
ISO: 100
This last one was a little experiment the kids tried out. We were looking at the playground across the pond and the kids were holding their fingers up to their eye (with one eye shut) trying to "squish" the swings. I told them about this cool picture we could take and they were all over it! It didn't work out perfectly (remember that they're ages 3, 4 and 5) but it was fun and they LOVED the results! (If you don't look too closely at his hands it looks like Christopher is holding Hannah on one hand and Tucker on the other.)

Shutter Speed: 1/125
Aperture: f/13

Now it's your turn. Upload your favorite 1-3 shots from this week showing what you've learned about aperture and depth of field. Using the Mister Linkey fields below type in your name and enter the permalink of your post or picture. Be sure to link back to this post if possible, either in the text of your post or the caption of your picture.
If you have a blog make sure to talk about what (if anything) you learned about aperture and depth of field as you shot in manual or aperture priority mode this week. As always, leave a comment below with feedback for me. Feel free to click on to other class member's photos and leave feedback for them also.
You have until 11:00 PM (EST) on Monday evening, March 29, to upload and link your photographs. Good luck and please let me know if you have any questions!

I love the ways that you experimented with aperture. My favorite is definitely the wood pile one. The detail and depth of field are astounding.
ReplyDeleteAs for my own pictures, I did a whole post on playgroup but was particularly pleased with the 1st picture (of a baby named Kinsley) and the 8th one (of a girl named Emma through a blue slide). In general, I took these pictures trying to do different kinds of filling-the-frame portraits.
I'm hoping to do more with aperture (as in, not just shooting wide open) in the next week or so. (See Miz Booshay's post on PW.)
Those purple flowers are sooo awesome!!! I love how bright they are. Great shots! Did you use auto focus or manual focus for that one? I find myself using manual focus a lot more now to get exactly the shot I want.
ReplyDeleteFun shot with the last one - though once again all are awesome! Checking out the others now!
ReplyDelete(and thanks again for doing this. My camera is becoming my friend again. The snow got between us...)
I'm so glad it's due at 11pm and not 7pm! Just made it in under the wire :-) So I really like your log pic amy and as for Aaron's pics...ummm...doesn't he test out of this class or something? His pictures are AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteAwesome Photos! Everyone. I didn't get as much time as I would have like to really experiment with this! I am really beginning to enjoy taking pictures, and not just snap shots!
ReplyDeleteI took some more picture of our pretty trees outside. Becka's picture of the cherry blossoms gave me the idea. I found it easier to experiment in the natural light than when I was taking pics indoors in the evening. I will send you a few once I upload them!
