This year I'm going to plant a vegetable garden. And what do veggies have to do with a sandbox? EVERYTHING!
Building the sandbox is part of Stage 1 in our backyard revitalization project. (It sounds way more exciting when I call it a "revitalization project" instead of just "cleaning up the junk"). Stage 1 also includes cleaning off the deck.
Stage 2 is digging out the weeds, poison ivy, rocks and other unwanted things from our garden area. It also includes a "wagon wash" (like a car wash but where the kids wash off the play things and deck furniture) and buying outdoor carpet for the deck.
Stage 3 is buying top soil and working that into the garden plot, putting the deck back together with all the furniture in the right spots and maybe getting an awning/tent/huge umbrella for part of the deck.
Stage 4 is actually planting the garden.
But Stage 1 - the sandbox - is HUGE because it gives the kids something to do while I'm cleaning and digging out the poison ivy. They can help with a lot, but NOT that (Christopher is crazy allergic).
I don't have any pictures of the actual construction... well, actually I do... but Christopher took them and they are exceptionally unflattering. Instead I'll show you the cute kid ones.
Christopher helped Stacy and I unload 700lbs of sand. That's right, 700lbs. It was a LOT of sand!
The next day it rained so a couple of days later Christopher, Hannah and their friend Tucker helped fill up the sandbox. They worked VERY hard.
Maybe I should say that Stacy worked very hard to make them feel like they were working very hard. I took pictures.
Then they played and played and played.
It has been totally worth it so far. They've had a blast! So far their favorite thing is to bring out the army men and turn the sandbox into a desert war zone.
I'm just hoping the fun holds up long enough for me to get through Stages 2-4!

Do you know what you want to plant? Where did you get the sand box from? Looks great!
ReplyDeleteI got the sandbox at Costco. I have a list of stuff I'm interested in planting (mostly veggies) but I'll do a post on it after the plants are in the ground... pictures, maybe a little garden map :-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice! What a great plan!
ReplyDeleteOutdoor carpet? That's a new one for me, but knowing you, it's probably super cool :)
Also, sorry about missing the assignment this week -- I can't put anymore pictures on the computer until after we move and set up some more storage. We're running out of space! (on the computer)
I love the desert war zone picture.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots! And awesome sandbox :)
ReplyDeleteJust one word of caution... I don't know if yours has a cover that stays flush with the box... if not, you may want to figure out some way to get a tarp over it. Cats tend to look at outdoor sandboxes as giant litterboxes.
You don't even want to knwo how I know that... just trust me.
