Retro Fun With Craft Sticks

You'd think a hard core camp chick like myself would have busted out the popsicle sticks a little sooner in the lives of her children.  Alas, I have failed them... until now.

In anticipation of a long, rainy afternoon I picked up a carton of 1,000 craft sticks at our local big box store.  Note to self: The box may look small but 1,000 is a LOT of craft sticks.

I gave the kids as many sticks as they wanted.  Hannah used 43.  Christopher used 41.  (Yes, we will be doing this activity again.)  I was surprised at how easily they picked up the box construction.  Thank you Lincoln Logs.

I willingly relinquished control of the glue and let Christopher go to town.  Hannah, on the other hand, was happy with a blob of glue and a paint brush.

Christopher made his "roof" but needed some help to get it to stand up. It was more of a patience issue as I ended up just holding it in place while the glue dried.

When they were done building Hannah asked if they could paint.  Why not?  It was still raining and we had two full hours until dinner.

Then I found the pom pom balls (and started questioning my craft supply purchasing habit).  Note to the Pampered Chef marketing department: Prep Bowls have many uses outside of the kitchen.

I justify my craft purchases by thinking of how happy the kids will be... and happy kids make happy moms. So, if happy kids cost $1.29? I'm all in.

The kids were super proud of their creations and I was pleased that we spent over an hour playing with an old school favorite.  Now, what to do with the 916 sticks they didn't use?

  2. How sweet and happy they look. If I remember, the glue we had a kids didn't hold very well. Our projects rarely stayed together. Love the addition of pompoms.

  4. Love the houses! To think when I was growing up we had to actually eat Popsicles to get the sticks!

My kids and I made Popsicle stick puzzles this week. I have a link to the tutorial in my blog if you're interested.

  5. LOL - I bought that exact box too and have about 950 sticks left! We used them on wedding programs that we made into fans since it was an outdoor wedding. I'm open for anything you find and want to share. They are sitting collecting dust right now.

  6. oh man, i am a big fan of craft sticks, too. my sisters and i used them to make puppets a lot (like using the stick for the puppet) and sometimes would combine them with the woodsy shapes from the craft stores, googly-eyes, and paint. ah, i miss those days :D
